Maternity Discharge: Helping Families Prepare for Birth at Allina
The Allina Health system delivers superior medical care to people in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The system includes 12 hospitals and more than 90 clinics and see about 110,000 admissions annually.
Allina Health’s birth center offers the full range of pregnancy and birthing care, including extras like hot tubs and their custom built Beginnings app, a mobile app that connects expecting mothers to tools and education as they move through pregnancy and prepare for delivery. As part of the discharge process, Allina Health wanted to ensure that new moms and dads have all the information they needed in a single location that was easily accessible by patients and integrated into the staff’s existing workflow.
Approach & Solution
Allina Health partnered with The Wellness Network to offer our award-winning HealthClips maternity patient education videos through a custom Allina Health HealthClips Online website. The website was organized to provide easy access from the homepage to playlists of Recommended Education covering topics ranging from infant safety to breastfeeding advice to education for NICU babies. While Allina Health patients have access to dozens of prenatal and maternity videos, staff have singled out four they recommend for all new moms. These include titles on managing pain during vaginal birth, preparing for a C-section, epidurals, and breastfeeding.
Thanks to the strong support from staff recommending these to new families, Allina Health is able to ensure that thousands of patients benefit from this education. In November 2020 alone, these videos were viewed more than 15,000 times, with hundreds of patients answering the comprehension questions after the video to signal if they understood the material or if they need more personal attention from a staff member. To keep the patient education top-of-mind with clinical teams, the Patient Education department produces a monthly newsletter that highlights changes to its written catalog and to the HealthClips library. This helps the health care teams and educators learn about HealthClips and how to access the videos.
